20th Century Women

MV5BMTkwNDE4NzQwM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNzQ5Nzg0MDI@._V1_UX182_CR0,0,182,268_AL_I’ve been sitting with this movie for a few days, and while there is something that appeals, there’s also something that repels — the combination that draws me to most works of art. Mike Mills has written and directed a complex work of art.

One senses family history here. Annette Benning is terrific in her role of a divorced mother of an only child. Brought up during the Depression and running a dilapidated boarding house, she is raising her son (Jude Zumann) with the help of her three boarders (Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning).

Mills has set a tone that he’s colored with music, light, memories and characters.
