Mike Mills has written and directed a complex work of art.

One senses family history here. Annette Benning is terrific in her role of a divorced mother of an only child. Brought up during the Depression and running a dilapidated boarding house, she is raising her son (Jude Zumann) with the help of her three boarders (Billy Crudup, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning).

Mills has set a tone that he’s colored with music, light, memories and characters.
