Screen Shot 2015-03-25 at 2.51.56 PM“Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Siddhartha Mukherjee, tells the complete story of cancer, from its first appearance in the fossilized remains of dinosaurs to the gleaming laboratories of modern research institutions. At six hours, the film interweaves a sweeping historical documentary; with intimate profiles of current patients; and an investigation into the latest scientific breakthroughs that may have brought us to the brink of effective treatments. “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladiesis” is directed by Barak Goodman and Executive Produced by Ken Burns, who is also the senior creative consultant.

Last night, Donna and I saw a truncated screening of the six-hour documentary, “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies.” The first of three consecutive episodes will be telecast Monday, March 30, on PBS. The film is a remarkable achievement, expertly and engagingly dealing with cancer’s history, science, challenges, and opportunities for cure. And the human side of cancer is powerfully addressed. Whatever you know or think you know about cancer, you’ll know a lot more after seeing this film. Highly recommended.
