Downton Abbey Season 6 Episode 6

I hope of all you “Downton Abbey” watchers caught the homage to Maggie Smith in last Sunday’s episode. I am referring to the scene where Cora and the Crawley girls are leading tours of the house, and have to answer questions about the art and history they don’t know the answers to. In marches Violet, the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), who answers a question in her most imperious way. This recalls Maggie Smith’s star turn in Peter Shaffer’s late ’80s play, “Lettice and Lovage,” which he wrote specifically for Dame Maggie. In the play she is a tour guide in a historic English place who embellishes the facts to make them more interesting. I like Julian Fellowes much better for his having honored her this way.
