Emerson String Quartet

Last week we went to hear the Emerson String Quartet who are on tour and happily landed at Alice Tully Hall for a masterful concert featuring Haydn Op. 76, Nos. 1 and 4 as well as Beethoven Quartets, Op. 18, Nos. 3 and 4.

Flawless (except for a broken cello string) and a pleasure to listen to, these four gentlemen have been practicing their art for three decades to tumultuous applause and many awards (Grammys, Gramophone, Avery Fisher prize and on.) They have a polished excellence that matches the music they play.

The printed program illustrates four smiling and handsome young fellows holding their instruments; that night we saw four equally arresting, but seasoned performers enjoying their music and obviously each other’s company.

They are peripatetic to be sure, having traveled throughout Europe and Asia and the places in between. Should you find them listed as Coming Events do go out of your way to hear them.
