“Five Came Back” is a new Netflix series exploring the World War II films made by five key Hollywood directors, as told by the top directors of today. It shows what John Ford, Frank Capra, William Wyler, John Huston and George Stevens did for the war effort. Netflix is showing the three-episode series, and also airing many of the documentaries. The story of “The Battle of Midway,” directed by John Huston from footage he shot during the battle, is worth the watch in itself. Getting the film out, editing it without the Navy knowing, and how he manipulated President Roosevelt to have the movie shown in three quarters of the movie theaters in America is fascinating. There is so much more — for any film or WWII buff, this is a must, and for everyone else, it’s a delight.
