Flora Bar

I tend to stay away from the upper east side, but there is a fine new edition that is worth the trip ( for us “south half of Manhattan” types): Flora Bar, located in the lower courtyard level of the Met Breuer.

This is the latest creation of the team that brought you Estela and Café Altro Paradiso. The space is large and dramatic, the food terrific, the service/staff friendly, a great bar and a well curated, reasonable wine list. To my taste, I think the food is the best of the three places from this team. Lots of “smaller” plates to create a meal from – as well as a small selection of main courses. A great test of a bar is how they make a classic gin martini: passed with flying colors. A raw fluke and uni appetizer was fresh and creatively presented. A riff on a Caesar salad was surprising and good. My main was lobster ravioli in broth — somewhat Japanese in its flavor notes. A nice change from the rather heavy-handed way that lobster is often treated. It was wonderfully light. A 2010 Cherisey Puligny Montrachet La Garenne went perfect with the food. Passed on dessert in favor of a glass of champagne.

Definitely going again.
