Gershwin’s Concerto in F

The photograph of Yuja Wang on the invitation showed an athletic female Lang Lang with a short skirt, which diminished her talent immediately. But no such person appeared on stage with Michael Tilson Thomas and the superb group of musicians of the London Symphony Orchestra.

Instead, an elegantly dressed and extremely competent pianist sat down at the Steinway and polished off Gershwin’s Concerto in F with flawless technique and obvious joy to a breathless audience. Rather than the clichéd flash of many current artists, Ms. Wang chose to emulate more restrained mien; the result of which was that all her energy went into interpreting this glorious rendition of Gershwin at the height of his powers.

Other offerings from the LSO were expertly performed, but it was Ms. Wang who was the hit of the evening.
