Get On Up

James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, is brilliantly portrayed by Chadwick Boseman (who played Jackie Robinson in 42) in the new biopic Get On Up. The film moves back and forth in time, with many psychological flashbacks that give tremendous insight into the forces driving him. Dan Ackroyd as his early career Jewish manager, Viola Davis as his mother, and an amazing set of musicians make this a strong movie throughout. Boseman has learned all the moves, but so did co-producer Mick Jagger, who has acknowledged how much he borrowed from James Brown. We found it really good entertainment, with only a hint of pretentiousness in some of the cinematic devices overused. I’d give it 4 of 5 stars.
