Kyle Abraham’s Pavement

Screen Shot 2014-01-01 at 10.02.33 PMI tire of inner-urban dance treatments quickly. However. the new CEO of the Contemporary Arts Center here in New Orleans has some great relationships with national contemporary artists, which rewarded us with a weekend from an emerging young choreographer named Kyle Abraham. The recent recipient of a MacArthur Genius Award, Abraham performed his own work, Pavement. Set on an inner-city basketball court, this seven-person dance piece was elegant, honest and thought-provoking. The dancers were obviously classically trained, and aware of the challenges facing youth trying to come of age in the “projects.” If you have a chance to see work by this young man, I recommend you do.
