Les Liaisons Dangereuses

les-liaisons-dangereuses-2This is just the sort of complex French interaction of the sexes that once brought the entire nation its reputation for both délicatesse and cruelty. Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ examination of 18th Century aristocratic behavior begins when one Grande Dame decides to goad her lover into deflowering two guileless young women “for revenge.”

Liev Schreiber is a superb Lothario – posturing, seducing, promising neutrality then pouncing at precisely the right moment. His success with both tender hearts is gratifying to La Marquise de Merteuil, impresario of this wicked plot (coolly played by Janet McTeer), until the older daughter actually touches his heart. The denoument is somewhat predictable and sad, which proves that not only the British but also the French sometimes have to keep a stiff upper lip.

What is never clear is why La Marquise wishes to exact revenge upon Madame de Volanges, but of course, that is why one must read THE BOOK!
