Letter from Messina

Screen Shot 2013-08-22 at 2.14.38 PMWe stopped in Messina, Italy, and were debating the many tours offered by our Seabourn cruise. Instead of following in the footsteps of the Godfather, or going back to Taormina, we decided to just walk into the center of town to see the Duomo clock at noon. And what a clock!

At twelve, just after the bells, the lion begins to roar, spins his flag a few times and roars again. Then the cockerel just below crows, finally, the Ave Maria begins to play as the angels revolve around, and a small church appears. If you’ve seen the clock at the Central Park Zoo, you have seen a very small slice. This one takes fully 15 minutes to play out, with deservedly large crowds each day. Worth the time if you’re ever in Sicily.
