New York City Ballet Opening

Opening night is always an adventure. One glimpses what the season will be about, how it will evolve, what will be emphasized. This year, contemporary music and fashion were the highlights on opening night, including Prabal Gurung, Iris Van Herpen, and Olivier Theyskens as well as the familiar Karinska for Western Symphony.

Obviously, NYC Ballet aims to bring its audience into the 21st Century in a big way, and given the Lukas Foss, Nico Muhly and John Cage interpretations, there was something odd and out of step with the final Hershy Kay/George Balanchine piece that was offered as a finale.

“Get with it” was the message, and if one doesn’t enjoy writhing around on the stage as an art form, one might wish to miss the entire New York City Ballet season.
