Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra

As is often the case, there are fine musical organizations that seek support from philanthropists in the United States. They come from Salzburg, Vienna, London, Israel, etc., and now Oxford University has joined “the chorus.”

We happened to attend a concert recently led by Marios Papadopoulos MBE, with renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov and members of the orchestra. The main event was a rarely performed octet in E-flat major for stringed instruments by Mendelsson.

This was, of course, a mere soupçon of their star power, inasmuch as they expect Vladimir Ashkenazy, Valery Gergiev, Lang Lang, Yefim Bronfman and others to appear during their 2016/2017 season. You will have to go the Sheldonian Theater, etc., to hear more, but it’s worth knowing that this is a first-rate orchestra in search of a bigger audience.
