PUNK: Chaos to Couture

Today I took a mental leap and went to see “Punk” at the Metropolitan Museum. I loved it. It was particularly interesting for me to observe how great designers such as Givenchy, Moschino, Watanabe and Dolce & Gabbana took this rebellious street style and transformed it into risky elegant designs with a mischievous edge. The exhibition is creatively presented with plenty of material: garbage bag dresses, spike shoes, ripped jeans, etc. It made me think of my punk days when I wore my share of carefully ripped jeans and torn T-shirts with carefully placed safety pins. I even had a bullet belt. I could be arrested if I dared wear it now, but I look at it every once in a while and think of my mother’s face when she saw some of my creations! Do see the show – it’s great fun. There was a great element of humor, not just rebellion, in punk.
