32191744David Daley’s “Ratfucked” is a frightening review of how the GOP’s gerrymandering has redrawn the American political map. Gerrymandering has been around since the early 1800s when Elbridge Gerry, the governor of Massachusetts, redrew a state map, redistricting to favor his party, in so contorted a way, one of the districts resembled a salamander. In recent years, with increasingly sophisticated computer programs for mapping, gerrymandering has become much more precise and effective. Daley makes too many great points in this book to list here, but one of his most profound observations is that democracy is under severe threat. While the country shifts to the center and even on social issues, slightly left of center, the far right gains more and more power. Increasingly, on local, state and national levels, the right makes decisions that go directly against the will of the people. This is an amazingly informative and important book.
